House Tawse – Taking living to a higher level

While we have designed buildings on stilts in the past, this is the first Baufritz house mounted on a steel platform high above the ground. The clients had long dreamt of living by the water, so when a riverside plot came up for sale, they jumped at the opportunity. Situated on a riverside plot in a picturesque location near Wargrave, nestled between two rivers, the site is a designated flood zone with a high risk of flooding.

The new house is set slightly back from the river and raised 1.8 metres above ground to minimise the risk of water damage in case of flooding. The client first asked Baufritz to design the house before finding an external contractor to construct the steel platform. This comprises a total of 72 piles, each bored 15 meters into the ground. The house itself is a contemporary design with a white mineral render façade. The roof is flat with a butterfly construction. Windows of various sizes allow plenty of light into the house.

In the face of climate change, houses must be designed to be more resilient. Prefab homes are ideal for this purpose. They take less time to assemble and can be easily adapted to the conditions on site, for example by building them on stilts. Baufritz wall elements are lightweight thanks to their timber construction, making them easier to transport over difficult terrain.
