Zero energy living in a Baufritz house

Baufritz self-builders, Deborah and Mark, have made sustainability a core principle of their self-build project. The design of the roof, the configuration of the house and positioning of the windows all take energy efficiency into account.

The completed house has 24, 485-watt PV panels, angled to maximise their efficiency. Power is backed up by a bank of six batteries. The family has an agreement with their energy provider that allows them to sell electricity back to the grid, including up to 50% of the battery storage when grid demand is at its peak and buying energy back at the cheaper night tariffs. The energy is used to provide heating and hot water through an air source heat pump and underfloor heating.

Since moving in in March 2024, they have used just 40p of energy!

The Baufritz HOIZ building envelope, combined with a modern airtight construction process, has resulted in a home with an excellent EPC rating of 115. The large roof area required for PV panels is a perfect rainwater source for the 4000 litre water storage tanks, providing water for the garden and other non-potable uses.
