House Graylings - A country hideaway

Graylings is a contemporary house overlooking the Surrey Hills. It is a haven of peace and tranquillity set in a stunning natural environment. The clients’ appreciation of Japanese architecture is reflected throughout the house and garden.

The house is designed “upside down” with the bedrooms on the lower floor. A double-height, open-plan kitchen and living area takes up the entire first floor of the main wing, with a fully glazed gable end offering unobstructed views. A separate wing accommodates the master bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The two wings are linked by a single-floor hallway and a lounge with a Japanese-inspired theme, including two striking murals of Koi fish. The hall and lounge are separated by bespoke frameless glass sliding doors.

The house and garden have been designed as a single, continuous entity. Pocket gardens and a living, green roof foster diversity and provide a habitat for insects and bees. A running water feature creates low-level white noise, encouraging relaxation. As the couple are keen gardeners, raised beds have been installed next to a greenhouse in a contemporary, transparent dome structure.
