The Future Homes Standard 2025 is an initiative by the UK government aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions from new homes. Self-builders partnering with Baufritz need not be concerned, as our houses are inherently sustainable. The primary change involves energy efficiency, requiring new homes to generate 75-80% fewer carbon emissions compared to current standards. Additionally, low carbon heating solutions are mandated, and energy-efficient homes lend themselves well to heat pump technology.
While insulation is crucial, ventilation and overheating also pose challenges, particularly in highly insulated homes. Implementing a Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery System (MVHRS) along with intelligent shading solutions such as blinds and brise soleil can mitigate excessive solar gain during summer months.
Smart technologies, including photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) charging, are essential to support the transition to zero-emission transportation. These measures are part of a broader effort to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The new regulations will come into effect in 2025 and build on the updates to Parts L and F of the Building Regulations introduced in 2021.
We have numerous examples within our portfolio of Baufritz houses that meet the 2025 objectives. As a self-builder, you can maintain your design inspirations while adhering to and even surpassing the objectives of the Future Homes Standard.
